Schempp-Hirth self-launching gliders start the engine from a button, and the pilot's hand at that moment is on the stick. This option puts the button on the grip: a red engine starter button on the LX joystick, with two additional wires in the grip's cable bundle for the aircraft's engine start circuit.
Why on the grip
An engine start in a self-launcher happens with the aircraft flying, the other hand on the throttle and the eyes outside. A starter button under the thumb of the hand already on the stick is the safest place it can be — no reaching, no looking down.
How it is fitted
Ordered together with the joystick, or added to one you have. The two starter wires are connected by your installer to the engine start wiring point specified by the aircraft manual; the button itself does nothing else and is not read by the instrument.
