The LX 10K always flies with a vario indicator beside it. This is the digital one in 80 mm: a 3.5 inch transflective screen where the analogue indicator's needle would be, drawing the needle the way a pilot reads it — with peripheral vision, eyes outside — and adding what a needle cannot: the averager, the speed-command arrows, the audio mode and the netto or relative reading you selected.
Why digital
A needle is the fastest thing to read while thermalling, which is why the LX 10K still has one. A screen lets the needle be joined by the numbers that decide the next decision — how the last thirty seconds averaged, whether you are above or below speed-to-fly — without turning your head to the main unit.
Why 80 mm
For the panel that has a second 80 mm hole, or the pilot who wants the needle large. The 3.5 inch screen is the same one the LX 10K main unit carries, and the indicator connects to it over one CAN cable, which carries the data and the power.
